Ketchup – any regular ketchup works. You’ll use it to attach the eyes and you can of course use it as a dipping sauce as well! You could also substitute the ketchup with a dot of mustard instead of if you prefer.
How to make mummy dogs for Halloween
These aren’t too tough to make but make sure to read through the instructions below to make sure you cut the crescent roll dough correctly and wrap the mummies in the right way. I mean there’s not really a wrong way, but there’s a better and not so good way! To start, heat oven to 375 degrees and line a baking sheet with a piece of parchment paper. Pat the hot dogs dry with a paper towel to get out any excess moisture (the crescent roll dough will stick better) and set them aside. Roll out the crescent roll dough carefully. If you’re using actual crescent roll triangles, roll it out into a triangle and press perforations together so you have one full sheet of dough. Use either a pizza cutter, a sharp knife, or even kitchen scissors (but not my favorite method) to cut the dough into 1/4 inch thin strips. The goal is to make all of your pieces of dough about the same thickness if possible. Make sure to stick with thin strips of dough so you have enough to cover all of the hot dogs. If you use wide strips, you won’t be able to wrap the dough strips around the hot dog as many times so your mummy won’t look as wrapped. Take a strip of dough (to use as the mummy wraps) and a hot dog and gently wrap the dough around the hot dog going from one end of each hot dog to the other. I like to leave a little spot toward the toy for the mummy’s face but you could wrap them completely if you want and just put the mummy eyes on top instead. Once they’re all wrapped, place the wrapped hot dogs on the prepared baking sheet, making sure to leave a little space between the mummies. Repeat with all of the mummies. Then place the cookie sheet in the oven and bake for 11-13 minutes (or 10-12 depending on how hot your oven cooks) until the mummy wrap on the outside is golden brown and the hot dogs are warmed completely. Let the mummies cool for a few minutes then add a little dot of ketchup (or a dab of mustard) on the back of each of the candy eyes and place them on the front of the mummy dogs to create the mummy’s face.
Expert Tips
Make these cheesy mummy dogs by using cheese hot dogs instead of regular ones! They’ll give you that cheesy flavor without all of the mess! Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. These are best served immediately after cooking them, but they will store okay. Just make sure to reheat them in the oven, not the microwave, so they don’t get soggy.
